This book reports on studies
intended to introduce a new classification of motivation in learning English in
the Indonesian context. The studies reported in this book focus on empirical
evidence related to motivation in learning English. Different classifications
of motivation are presented in Chapter One and a potential problem in
classifiying motivation in learning English is also identified in this chapter.
Chapter Two addresses how language learners may perceive a target language in
different ways depending on their beliefs and knowing the beliefs and attitudes
that students have in regard to learning a foreign language. Chapter three
identifies how the use of language learning strategies plays an important role
in the success of acquiring English as a foreign language. This chapter
discussess the influence of language motivation on metacognitive strategies and
language performance. In Chapter Four extrinsic and intrinsic orientations are
not the only types of motivation in education; in pre-service teacher program
it has been found that people may have another orientation together with
extrinsic and intrinsic orientations, which is called altruistic orientation.
Chapter Five reports how extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, together with the
three aspects of self-system, self efficacy and language anxiety, were
correlated with motivated behaviour of EFL learners in a tertiary setting.
Chapter six proposes a new classification of motivation in learning a foreign
language, which is called three-category motivation. The classification
consists of three categories, namely extrinsic orientation, intrinsic
orientation and international orientation. The last chapter, chapter seven
summarizes the previous chapters. //ir
